Forte das Cavalas, Military fort in São Sebastião, Angra do Heroísmo, Portugal.
Forte das Cavalas is a fortress in the Azores situated on the eastern point of Salga Bay, built directly on rocky terrain. The structure features a polygonal design adapted to fit the natural contours of Terceira Island's coastline.
The fortress was built in the 16th century during the 1580 Succession Crisis and followed designs by engineer Tommaso Benedetto from 1567. The structure represented Portugal's strategy to secure its overseas possessions during this period of political turmoil.
The fortress reflects Portuguese approaches to coastal defense, part of a defensive network that shielded the southern shores of Terceira Island from maritime threats.
The location at the far eastern end of the bay provides clear views across the water and surrounding coastline. Visitors should expect steep pathways and uneven stone surfaces that follow the rocky terrain.
During World War II, sections of the structure served as temporary quarters for gunners stationed to monitor the adjacent bays. This repurposing reveals how military installations adapted to changing needs across different periods.
