Chapel of the Apparitions, Catholic chapel in Sanctuary of Fátima, Portugal

The Chapel of the Apparitions is a small chapel at the heart of the Fátima Sanctuary in Portugal, marking where three children reported seeing the Virgin Mary in 1917. A white marble pillar now stands on the spot to commemorate this claimed encounter.

Construction began in 1919 after the reported events of 1917, but the chapel was destroyed by explosives in 1923 and later rebuilt. This history of destruction and restoration became part of its spiritual significance for visitors.

The chapel is where you see people come to pray and light candles in remembrance of what happened here in 1917. It stands at the heart of pilgrimage because visitors feel a personal connection to the events reported at this site.

The chapel is open daily for visitors to enter and spend time in prayer or quiet reflection. Religious services happen regularly throughout the week, giving you opportunities to join in if you wish.

An old oak tree once stood at this exact spot and was at the center of the original events, before it was eventually removed. Though the tree no longer exists, its history remains woven into the spiritual traditions of those who visit today.
