Vama Veche - 2 Mai, Marine nature reserve on Black Sea coast, Romania
Vama Veche - 2 Mai is a protected coastal area on the Black Sea shore featuring varied marine ecosystems and habitats. The zone includes shallow waters, sandy areas, and rocky sections where fish, molluscs, and other organisms live in their natural environment.
The reserve was created to protect the waters near the former fishing settlements of Vama Veche and 2 Mai. Its establishment followed the recognition that these sensitive marine habitats needed safeguarding from overuse.
The reserve supports a variety of marine life adapted to Black Sea conditions that have sustained local fishing communities for generations. This connection between the sea and the people who live along the coast remains visible in the region's traditions.
The area is accessible via the coastal road running between Constanta and the Bulgarian border. Anyone conducting research or scientific work within the reserve will need special permits from the relevant authorities.
This is Romania's only officially designated marine protected area on the Black Sea coast, hosting rare sessile species attached to the sea floor. These specialized bottom-dwelling organisms are found in few other locations in the region.
