Skenderaj, municipality of Kosovo
Skenderaj is a town set in the hilly landscape of Kosovo's Drenica region in the northern part of the country, situated approximately 600 meters above sea level. The area extends across roughly 378 square kilometers with rivers including the Klina, Sitnica, and Drenica flowing through the terrain, bordered by settlements like Drenas, Klina, and Mitrovica.
Skenderaj is known as the birthplace of the Albanian uprising against Serbian rule, with the hero Adem Jashari beginning his resistance in the nearby village of Prekaz. The region served as an important center for education and trade across various historical periods throughout the centuries.
Skenderaj is named after Skanderbeg, the legendary warrior who fought against Ottoman rule and remains a symbol of national pride in the region. The town's identity is deeply rooted in stories of resistance and bravery that locals share through museums and monuments.
