Olympiysky Sports Complex, Indoor sports arena in Meshchansky District, Moscow, Russia
Olympiysky Sports Complex is an indoor sports facility with several halls in Meshchansky District, Moscow, Russia. The main arena seats over twenty thousand spectators beneath a curved roof and is surrounded by smaller training halls that accommodate different sports.
The facility was built as the main venue for basketball and boxing during the 1980 Summer Olympics and opened at the end of July that year. Since then, the hall has been used for additional sports and large music events, including two Bandy World Championships.
The complex sits in central Moscow and has drawn a broad audience for sports and music events for decades. The main hall hosted major international competitions and concerts, making the facility a familiar gathering point where people from all parts of the city come together.
Access is available from Prospekt Mira metro station, which is within walking distance. Visitors should expect waiting times during major events, as the grounds often see heavy foot traffic.
The hall was the first covered venue for bandy worldwide, an ice sport normally played outdoors. This adaptation allowed Moscow to host two world championships, even though the game traditionally takes place on open ice surfaces.
