Mezhgorye, Secured military settlement in Bashkortostan, Russia
Mezhgorye is a closed military town in the Mezhgorye Urban Okrug of Bashkortostan, Russia, located around 200 kilometers southeast of Ufa in the southern Ural Mountains. The compact settlement sits at 560 meters (1,837 feet) above sea level near Mount Yamantau and consists of functional residential blocks surrounded by security barriers.
Founded in 1979 under the code designation UFA-105, the site gained formal town status in 1995. Development occurred during the Soviet period to support classified defense programs in the southern Urals.
Built to serve a restricted military facility, the community brings together service members who live with their families in uniform housing. Daily life takes place behind security fences, with residents relying on basic amenities provided within the settlement.
Access requires official military clearance obtained in advance, with checkpoints enforcing entry restrictions. Travelers should confirm requirements well ahead of time, since unannounced arrivals are not permitted.
Two separate military battalions coordinate operations here, though almost no official details about their missions reach the public. Despite this secrecy, the town appears on official maps as a recognized administrative unit.
