Bulunsky District

Bulunsky District sprawls across northern Sakha Republic with Arctic tundra covering most of the land and the Lena River delta creating a network of waterways. The terrain remains flat and marshy, shaped by permafrost and seasonal water flow.

The district was established in 1930 with its first administrative center in Kyusyur, later moving to the coastal settlement of Tiksi. This shift reflected changes in settlement patterns and access to transportation routes.

Russians, Evenks, Yakuts, and Evens live here and continue speaking their own languages while following traditional practices. Reindeer herding remains an important part of daily life across the tundra landscape.

Tiksi serves as the main entry point and connects the district through sea routes along the Laptev Sea and river access via the Lena. Plan for harsh weather conditions, especially during winter months when temperatures drop significantly.

Winter temperatures plunge below minus 40 degrees in inland areas while southern zones experience milder conditions during summer months. This dramatic range results from proximity to the Arctic Ocean and the open tundra landscape.
