Bolschaja-Momskaja-Aufeis, Ice formation in Momsky District, Russia.
The Bolschaja-Momskaja-Aufeis is a massive ice formation in the Momsky region of Sakha Republic, extending across vast distances in the far north. It forms from groundwater sources that freeze and accumulate, creating thick layers that persist year-round.
This ice formation developed through natural geological processes over time and gained legal protection in 1996 when it was included in Moma Natural Park. The park recognition helped preserve the site along with other significant natural features of the region.
The indigenous Yakut and Even communities of the Momsky District maintain traditional practices while living near this natural ice formation throughout the seasons.
Access requires specialized equipment and local expertise due to extreme cold and difficult conditions in this remote Arctic region. Visitors should be fully prepared for the harsh environment and travel only with experienced guides.
During warmer months, water flows through channels within the frozen structure, creating dynamic pathways within the ice. This phenomenon shows how the formation continues to be shaped by water movement despite its massive thickness.
