Novodevichy Cemetery

Novodevichy Cemetery is a burial ground with expansive grounds near the Moscow Triumphal Gate, where marble monuments and cast iron decorative elements mark the landscape. The site displays a range of architectural styles across its tombs, from classical to modern monument designs.

The site was established in 1845 and developed alongside a convent to become Saint Petersburg's second most important burial ground after Tikhvin. Its connection to a religious center shaped the place from its beginning.

The cemetery serves as the final resting place for artists, musicians, and writers whose legacies continue to shape Russian culture. Many graves here belong to figures whose work remains celebrated in the country's artistic tradition.

Access is via the Moskovskie Vorota metro station, with the main entrance at Moskovsky Prospekt 100. Visitors should expect uneven paths and wear comfortable shoes, as the grounds are extensive.

Beneath the Church of Our Lady of Kazan, built in 1912 in neo-Byzantine style, lie roughly 500 burial chambers in an underground network rarely seen by visitors. This hidden architecture reveals the careful planning behind the site's design.
