Novospassky Monastery, Orthodox monastery in Tagansky, Russia.
Novospassky Monastery is an Orthodox monastery in the Tagansky District on the left bank of the Moskva River. The compound features a large Transfiguration Cathedral, two additional churches, and an eighteenth-century bell tower arranged on an enclosed grounds.
The monastery was originally founded in the Kremlin during the fourteenth century and relocated to its current location in 1491, receiving the name New Savior. The relocation was part of a broader reorganization of religious institutions in Moscow during that period.
The monastery displays religious artworks from different periods that show how artists developed their craft over time. The frescoes and icons reflect the artistic traditions that were maintained by successive generations of craftspeople.
The monastery is located at Krestyanskaya Square and is easily accessible from Proletarskaya Metro station. The best time to visit is early in the day when fewer visitors are present, allowing you to explore the buildings at your own pace.
The cellars beneath the complex contain a burial vault for members of the Romanov Dynasty, including several boyars and Grand Duke Sergei Aleksandrovich. This hidden burial chamber remains unknown to many visitors despite being an important part of Russian nobility history.
