Aeroport, Metro station in northern Moscow, Russia.
Aeroport is a metro station in northern Moscow on the Zamoskvoretskaya Line, built around a central platform flanked by two rows of white marble columns. The ceiling is lined with metal cladding and decorative elements that set its interior apart from other stations on the same line.
The station opened on September 11, 1938, as part of the second phase of expansion of the Moscow Metro. It was built during a period when the Soviet authorities were pushing the network north at a rapid pace.
The station takes its name from the old Khodynka airfield that once stood nearby and has since disappeared. The aviation theme is still visible today in the metal ornaments on the columns and the ceiling lights that echo the look of aircraft cabin lamps.
The station is on the Zamoskvoretskaya Line and is easy to reach from other central stations. Travelers heading to Sheremetyevo airport will need to continue by surface transport from here, so leaving some extra time is a good idea.
The ceiling lights were designed to mimic the landing lights used on airfields in the 1930s. This makes the interior one of the few places in the Moscow Metro where a specific piece of aviation technology was directly translated into a decorative element.
