Millennium Bridge, Cable-stayed bridge in Kazan, Russia
The Millennium Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge across the Kazanka River with a distinctive M-shaped pylon rising 45 meters above the road. The structure spans 835 meters, measures 28 meters wide, carries six lanes of traffic and pedestrian walkways, and connects Amirkhana Avenue to Vishnevsky Street.
Construction started in 2004, with the first section opening in July 2005 and the full structure becoming operational in August 2007. The completion coincided with the city's millennial celebrations.
The bridge was built to mark Kazan's 1000th anniversary, and its M-shaped design represents this milestone as well as the city itself. The name and form have become part of local identity and shape how people see the city.
The bridge carries daily traffic with lanes for vehicles and footpaths for pedestrians, which can become busy during rush hours. The best time to cross or explore is outside peak hours when you can better enjoy the structure and river views.
Before this permanent structure was built, residents used a temporary pontoon bridge to cross the river. This temporary solution served the city for years before being replaced by the modern span.
