Chermyanka, Protected waterway in northern Moscow, Russia
Chermyanka is a left-bank tributary of the Moskva River that runs through the northern part of Moscow, passing through dense residential areas. Its banks alternate between flat sections and slightly raised embankments, with a narrow strip of trees and shrubs running along much of its length.
Chermyanka was known since medieval times and shaped where people chose to settle along its banks. During the Soviet era, large housing blocks were built around it, gradually surrounding the river with urban development on all sides.
Local residents use the banks for fishing and walking, especially when the weather is mild. The river marks a natural boundary between several neighborhoods, and people from the surrounding blocks treat it as a shared outdoor space.
Several pedestrian bridges cross the river and connect the surrounding neighborhoods, making it easy to walk along both banks without backtracking. The area can be visited at any time of year, though paths may be slippery in winter due to snow and ice.
Although the river runs through a densely built part of the city, its banks still shelter bird species that have largely disappeared from the rest of urban Moscow. The strip of vegetation along the water acts as a natural corridor through which animals move across the urban area.
