Christinehof Castle, Baroque castle in Tomelilla Municipality, Sweden
Christinehof Castle is a white baroque building in the Swedish countryside of Tomelilla Municipality, with symmetrical wings, tall windows, and decorative details in the German baroque style. The grounds around it mix formal garden areas with open natural land.
Christina Piper, the widow of a Swedish statesman, had the castle built between 1737 and 1740 to replace the older Sjöstrup estate on the same land. She oversaw the project herself and shaped much of what visitors see today.
The name Christinehof directly honors Christina Piper, the woman who ordered its construction, and that connection is still felt when walking through the property today. The formal garden layout reflects how Swedish nobility in the 1700s shaped their surroundings to project order and status.
The castle is easiest to reach by car, and parking is available on site. Guided tours tend to run during the warmer months, while the outdoor grounds are generally open year-round.
Although the castle bears a woman's name, it was highly unusual in 18th-century Sweden for a widow to take charge of such a building project on her own. Christina Piper managed the estates independently, which made her a rare figure among the landowners of her time.
