Gasklockan, Gothenburg, Industrial heritage site in Gullbergsvass, Gothenburg, Sweden.
Gasklockan was a twenty-sided polygon structure measuring 81 meters tall with an internal diameter of 46 meters located at Gullbergsvass in Gothenburg. The building functioned as a gas storage facility with a distinctive geometric form that dominated the industrial landscape.
The structure was built in 1933 and stored up to 100,000 cubic meters of gas for Sweden's largest gasworks at Gullbergsvass. After six decades of operation, the facility was decommissioned in 1993 when newer energy sources replaced the gas industry.
The building served as a venue for music video shoots and sound art installations before its demolition, showing how industrial structures can become spaces for creative expression. Artists and performers found inspiration in the scale and character of this historic industrial landmark.
The site is located in an industrial area and is easily accessible by public transport or car. Visitors should note that the building no longer stands, as it was completely demolished in 2017.
Peregrine falcons nested at the top of the structure and required special environmental permits before demolition could proceed. The consideration given to this protected species delayed the demolition process and made the project an example of environmental protection in urban development.
