Hisingsbron, Vertical-lift bridge in central Gothenburg, Sweden
Hisingsbron is a vertical-lift bridge that spans across the Göta älv, connecting Hisingen island to central Gothenburg. The structure carries multiple modes of traffic on a single roadway above the water.
Construction started in 2017 to replace the aging Götaälvbro bridge and improve traffic flow between city areas. King Carl XVI Gustaf officially opened the new structure in September 2021.
The bridge serves as a central transportation hub in Gothenburg, connecting different parts of the city where trams, buses, cars, pedestrians, and cyclists share the same crossing daily.
You can cross on foot or by bike, or take the public transport that regularly runs here. It helps to stay on marked paths and watch for traffic, since multiple transport modes operate at the same time.
The bridge features LED lights throughout its structure that automatically change colors with the seasons. This colored lighting adjusts to match the changing hours of daylight across the year.
