Fågel Blå, Movie theater in Östermalm, Stockholm, Sweden

Fågel Blå is a cinema in Ostermalm that reopened with a renovated auditorium and modern projection equipment following a complete overhaul in fall 2023. An adjoining bistro and bar occupy the same building at Skeppargatan 60.

Fågel Blå opened in August 1926 as part of Karl Hjalmar Lundblad's Paraden cinema chain, designed by architect Josef Östlihn with interiors by NK's cinema department. In 1966 it passed to Ri-Teatrarna and was renamed Ri-Fågel Blå; from 1972 to 1975 it showed pornographic films as Porno Fågel Blå. In December 1980 the premises were rebuilt as Teater Fågel Blå, and in 1995 Ulf Berggren restored the hall to its 1926 colours with Boverket, county and city funding. Film screenings closed on 1 January 2000, Vår Teater used the hall until 2020, and filmmaker Axel Öhman reopened it as a cinema on 1 September 2023.

The name references Maeterlinck's symbolic work on the pursuit of happiness, reflecting the theater's focus on artistic cinema. This draws visitors who seek thoughtful films in a setting that values cultural engagement over commercial entertainment.

Fågel Blå occupies the ground floor at Skeppargatan 60 on Östermalm, with the entrance directly on the street and the bistro and cocktail bar in the same premises. The auditorium is reached from the entrance level; a smaller screening room, Holken, sits one flight up. The nearest subway stop is Karlaplan, a few minutes' walk away.

Sunday morning screenings feature a French breakfast with croissants, pain au chocolat, coffee, tea, and fresh juice included for viewers. Monday evenings regularly showcase films by director Ingmar Bergman with English subtitles.
