Maximteatern, Theatre in Östermalm, Stockholm, Sweden.
Maximteatern is a theatre on the ground floor of a residential building at Karlaplan 4 in the Östermalm district of Stockholm, with several performance spaces suited to different types of productions. The venue also has multiple bars serving food and drinks, spread across the same level as the stages.
The building opened in 1946 and the theatre started operating in the same year. In 1966, architect Ernst Grönwall redesigned the interior, giving the performance spaces the form they still largely follow today.
Maximteatern sits at the base of a residential building, which gives it a neighborhood feel that many dedicated theatre buildings lack. Guests often gather at the bar well before showtime, mixing with regulars from the surrounding streets of Östermalm.
The theatre is a short walk from Karlaplan subway station, so getting there by public transport is straightforward. Arriving early is a good idea since the on-site bars offer food and drinks before shows start.
The theatre was recently renovated with specialized acoustic work to stop sound from reaching the apartments on the floors above. This solution was needed because the building was designed from the start to serve both as housing and as a performance venue.
