Kôprovský štít, Mountain summit in High Tatras, Slovakia
Kôprovský štít is a rocky mountain summit in the High Tatras of Slovakia, located in the Poprad District. It sits along the main ridge of the High Tatras, with steep granite walls dropping into deep valleys on either side.
The peak was first climbed in the late 1800s, when mountaineers from across Central Europe began exploring the High Tatras in an organized way. Those early ascents set the foundation for the routes still used today.
The peak is part of the Kôprovská ridge, which Slovak mountaineers have long used as a crossing through the High Tatras. Along the way, climbers follow paths that connect valleys used for centuries by shepherds and traders before any tourist ever arrived.
The ascent requires solid physical fitness and proper mountain gear, as the terrain is rocky and the route is technically demanding in places. Weather in the High Tatras can shift very quickly, so it is worth checking conditions before setting out.
From the summit, a descent leads directly to Veľké Hincovo pleso, the largest natural lake in the Slovak part of the Tatras. The contrast between the bare rock above and the open water below gives the descent a sense of moving through two completely different worlds.
