Hrubý vrch, Mountain peak in High Tatras, Slovakia
Hrubý vrch is a peak in the High Tatras standing at 2,428 meters elevation as part of the mountain range's longest lateral ridge. The mountain rises steeply from surrounding valleys and has rocky, exposed terrain near its summit.
Hunters first explored the mountain's slopes in the 1800s, and winter mountaineers reached the summit in 1912. This climb marked the beginning of regular ascending by organized climbers.
The name comes from local highlander dialect and means "huge summit", reflecting how the mountain dominates the surrounding landscape and regional identity.
The peak is reached from Poprad city with regular transportation to Starý Smokovec at the mountain's base, making access straightforward for visitors. Climbers need proper mountain gear and experience with exposed rocky terrain.
The summit connects three different valleys allowing approaches from multiple directions, making routes varied and interesting for mountaineers. Climbers can descend through different terrain depending on which valley they choose.
