Statue of Jesus, Bronze religious monument at Cherubim Mountain, Saidnaya, Syria.
The Statue of Jesus is a bronze monument on Cherubim Mountain in Saidnaya, reaching a total height of 32 meters with the central bronze figure measuring 12.3 meters. It stands at an elevation of 2,100 meters and is flanked by companion figures that form an ensemble of multiple sculptures.
Construction of the monument began in 2005 and concluded in 2013, marking a period of local collaboration and dedication. The completion fell during a time of intense conflict, which underscores the structure's significance as a symbol of peace.
Armenian sculptor Artush Papoian created the central Jesus figure alongside statues of Adam and Eve, telling biblical stories through their arrangement. The sculptures together form a narrative about humanity and its connection to the divine.
The monument sits near Cherubim Monastery about 27 kilometers north of Damascus along an ancient pilgrimage route. The mountainside is steep, so visitors should wear sturdy shoes and allow extra time for the climb to reach the top.
The installation required special transportation using farm tractors and cranes to position the statue's segments, which arrived through Lebanon during the conflict. This unusual transport method shows the creativity and determination of those who kept the project moving through difficult times.
