Cha-am, Coastal district in Phetchaburi, Thailand
Cha-am is a coastal district in Phetchaburi stretching along the Gulf of Thailand with long sandy beaches and nine administrative subdivisions. The area combines flat coastal zones, salt ponds, and settlements spread across a large territory.
The area originated as Na Yang in 1897 before being renamed Nong Chok in 1914. After World War II, it received its current name and became an established administrative district.
The area preserves traditional ways of coastal life, with fishermen casting nets daily and local markets selling fresh catches from the sea. These practices shape the daily rhythm and remain central to how the place functions today.
Visitors reach Cha-am from Bangkok via National Route 4, a drive of about three hours, or by taking regular train services from the capital. The cooler months offer the most comfortable conditions for exploration.
The area is home to Webster University, one of Thailand's earliest American educational institutions, and the largest campus of Stamford International University. These two established universities bring an international academic community to the otherwise traditional coastal area.
