Chiang Mai University, Public university in Chiang Mai, Thailand
Chiang Mai University is a public institution in Chiang Mai in Thailand with faculties for medicine, natural sciences and agriculture. The main campus stretches across a wide area about four kilometers west of the city center and includes lecture halls, research centers and libraries.
The institution was founded in 1964 as the first provincial university outside Bangkok and was intended to provide northern Thailand with academic education. Doctoral programs were introduced from 1976 onward and expanded the offer to research and postgraduate studies.
The campus sits on a forested hillside at the edge of town and reflects the green landscape of northern Thailand. Students from the Lanna region and from international countries learn together under open pavilions and inside modern buildings.
The campus is wide and can be explored on foot or by bicycle. Some areas are open to visitors, but it is advisable to ask in advance about opening times for individual facilities.
The institution runs its own research center for highland peoples and studies the languages and ways of life of ethnic groups in the mountains of northern Thailand. The center offers insights into the diversity of the region that many travelers do not know.
