Ramkhamhaeng University, Public university in Bang Kapi District, Bangkok, Thailand
Ramkhamhaeng University is a public institution in Bang Kapi District, Bangkok, with its main grounds in Hua Mak and additional teaching facilities in Bang Na. The institution enrolls around 435,000 students and also hosts 1,300 international learners from 75 countries who benefit from academic exchange programs with universities in Germany, France and Japan.
The institution began operations in 1971 and took its name from King Ramkhamhaeng the Great of Sukhothai, who ruled in medieval Thailand. Its founding mission aimed at providing access to higher learning for broad sections of the population, making it one of the first open universities in the region.
The institution takes its name from a ruler who created the Thai alphabet in the 13th century and opened his realm to all who wished to learn. Many students work during the day and attend lectures in the evening, giving the campus a busy atmosphere outside regular office hours.
Annual tuition ranges from 7,155 to 8,880 baht, making enrollment affordable for many learners. It is best to visit the campus on a weekday when lectures and events take place and the grounds show their typical busy character.
The Institute of International Studies offers complete bachelor degrees in three years, with programs in English, Global Business and Media Communication. This shortened duration allows students to enter the workforce faster or continue their education in other countries.
