Mamure Castle

Mamure Castle is a medieval fortress on the Mediterranean coast that spans a large area with numerous towers connected by wide ramparts. The structure includes protective moats and displays architectural elements from different historical periods layered together.

Romans built the initial fortress in the 3rd century, which was later modified by Byzantines before a Seljuk Sultan significantly expanded it in the 13th century. This sequence of construction reflects changing powers in the region.

The mosque built during Ottoman times shows religious architecture with an octagonal drum beneath its central dome and a single minaret to the west. Visitors can observe how this space reflected the spiritual needs of those living and working within the fortress walls.

Access is via the D400 coastal highway with parking available near the entrance. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes since exploring the various levels and towers involves uneven surfaces and steep paths.

The grounds contain remnants of an ancient aqueduct that brought water from distant mountains, as well as a lighthouse in the southern area. These rare additions show the infrastructure needed to sustain this strategic location.
