Sestos, human settlement
Sestos was an ancient Greek city located on the Thracian shore of the Dardanelles Strait. The archaeological remains include fortification walls, residential structures, and harbor facilities layered from different periods of occupation.
The city was established by Greek settlers and became a crucial trading hub controlling passage through the strait. It experienced successive conquests by Persians, Romans, and eventually Ottomans before being abandoned.
The site sits on hillside terrain with sea views and requires sturdy footwear for uneven ground. Visiting in spring or autumn offers pleasant weather and better visibility for exploring the scattered remains.
