Trapessac, Medieval fortress in Hatay Province, Turkey.
Trapessac is a stone fortress in Hatay Province located on elevated ground north of Kirikhan, with sturdy defensive walls and tower structures that rise above the surrounding landscape. The site consists of interconnected sections built into the terrain, creating a compound that once served as a military stronghold.
The fortress was built in the 12th century by the Knights Templar to control a strategic mountain pass between regions. Later, Armenian and Mamluk forces captured and rebuilt sections according to their own military needs.
The fortress displays building styles that developed as different groups left their marks on the structure over time. Walking through it, you can observe how construction methods changed and adapted to the needs of each new occupant.
The site is accessible via secondary roads north of Kirikhan, though you will need a vehicle and should ask locally for directions. Wear sturdy footwear and be prepared for uneven terrain, as the ancient pathways and stairs are not maintained.
The fortress is a rare example of a site where Crusader and Islamic military architecture can be seen together in the same structure. This feature makes it especially valuable for understanding how different military traditions influenced each other.
