Qigu Lagoon, Coastal lagoon in Cigu District, Taiwan
Qigu Lagoon is a coastal water body in Cigu District covering approximately 1,600 hectares with numerous oyster farms along its shoreline. Fishing nets, small boats, and wooden farming structures are scattered across the water.
The lagoon is what remains of the Taijiang Inner Sea, a major shipping route that existed over 300 years ago. Over the centuries, the coastline changed through natural deposits and human activities.
The oyster farms around the lagoon show methods passed down through generations that shape the daily life of local fishermen. The wooden structures and nets are part of what you see every day here.
Visitors can travel by shallow-draft boats across the lagoon to get closer views of the oyster farms and surrounding water landscape. The best time for these trips is during calm weather when visibility is good.
During winter months, cormorants rest on the oyster structures and use them as stopping points between diving sessions. This natural event draws birdwatchers from different regions to gather here.
