Opytne, Settlement in Yasynuvata Raion, Ukraine
Opytne is a rural settlement in Donetsk Oblast in eastern Ukraine, located a few kilometers west of the formerly contested city of Avdiivka. The village stretches across flat farmland at about 200 meters (650 feet) elevation and consists of low houses along unpaved and paved roads.
The village was established in 1928 and developed as an agricultural experiment station until the military conflict in the region began in 2014. Opytne stood near the frontline for years, leading to destruction and a sharp decline in population.
The name Opytne comes from the Ukrainian word for experimental, referring to agricultural testing fields once operated in this area. Residents and returnees today work together to reclaim farmland and rebuild village routines after years of hardship.
Access to the settlement depends on the current security situation, so travelers should check with local authorities before visiting. Roads may be damaged and infrastructure remains partly restored after years of conflict.
Between 2001 and 2021, the population dropped from over 750 to fewer than 40 people, one of the sharpest declines in the entire region. Some houses now stand empty while others are slowly repaired by returning residents.
