Karaul-Oba, Mountain in Novyi Svit, Ukraine
Karaul-Oba is a mountain summit near Novyi Svit in Ukraine, rising to about 341 meters with steep rock walls and juniper forest covering its slopes. Several caves run through the mountain, including one known as Cold Cave, which gives the terrain an extra layer of depth beyond what is visible from outside.
The ruins of a 1st-century Bosporan fortress sit at the top, built to watch over the coast and guard against sea raids. Long before the fortress was put up, the Tauri people had already settled in this area, as shown by traces found during excavations.
The name Karaul-Oba comes from Crimean Tatar and means Watch Mountain, a name that still makes sense when you stand at the top and look down at the bays below. The view from the summit shows exactly why someone would have chosen this spot to keep watch over the coastline.
A marked green trail starts from Vesyoloye village and winds up to the summit, passing several viewing spots along the way. Going in the morning gives clearer visibility and means fewer people on the path, which makes the walk more comfortable especially in summer.
The Valley of Hell is a narrow gorge on the slope that many hikers walk past without noticing because they are focused on reaching the top. Cold Cave inside the mountain stays at around 10 degrees Celsius all year, so stepping inside on a hot day feels noticeably cooler than the air outside.
