Michael and Fedor Church

Michael and Fedor Church is a stone building in Byzantine Revival style in Chernihiv, distinguished by its central dome resting on an octagonal drum. The exterior features eight arched windows and decorative arcades that give the structure its notable appearance.

Construction began in 1801 near the residence of Hetman Pavlo Polubotok and was completed in 1806, with consecration in 1808. The building was transformed from its original classical style with baroque elements to its current Byzantine appearance during late 19th-century renovations.

This church holds the only dedication in Ukraine to Prince Michael of Chernihiv and his companion Fedor, making it a singular place of veneration. The interior with its golden-white iconostasis, installed in 2008, creates a solemn setting that reflects the devotion to these two saints.

The church is located at Hetmana Polubotka Street 40/2 in Chernihiv and maintains regular services. An information board on site displays details about its historical importance and helps visitors understand more about the building.

The building underwent a remarkable transformation where classical and baroque features were completely replaced with Byzantine elements. This architectural evolution shows how aesthetic preferences in the region changed over several decades.
