Norwalk, Coastal city in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States
Norwalk is a coastal city in Fairfield County, Connecticut, stretching along the northern shore of Long Island Sound and covering several residential areas. Wide river mouths, parks, and a harbor district with shops and restaurants shape the waterfront landscape.
During the Revolutionary War, British troops destroyed most of the settlement by fire, forcing the community to rebuild its structures. Later, the place gained notoriety through a train accident over the river in the mid-19th century.
The aquarium and historic mansions draw families and history enthusiasts who want to learn about maritime themes or 19th-century architecture. Each fall, a local film festival showcases work by independent filmmakers from the region and beyond.
An alert system keeps residents updated on important events and emergencies, while the different neighborhoods each have their own character. Visitors will find different spots for recreation and shopping along the coast and in residential areas.
A railway accident over the river in 1853 is considered the first of its kind in the nation and led to stricter safety regulations for bridges and trains. This event changed the development of rail transport across America permanently.
