Newport, Coastal city in Rhode Island, United States
Newport is a city on the southern part of Aquidneck Island, surrounded by Narragansett Bay and with several beaches along the coast. Streets run parallel and perpendicular to the water, with residential neighborhoods on one side and older buildings in the center on the other.
The settlement began in 1639 when religious refugees from Massachusetts moved here and founded a community. During the 18th century, the harbor grew into a major trading center with connections to Africa and the Caribbean.
The city draws sailors from different countries during summer, who compete in regattas or dock their boats in the harbor. At the same time, many families visit the public beaches and parks, where they picnic, walk, or relax on the sand.
Visitors can reach most places on foot within the center, while a car is needed for the more spread out residential areas. During summer, beaches and parking lots can get crowded, so visiting outside peak season is recommended.
An old tavern from 1673 still serves food and drinks in the same rooms that have been used for over three centuries. The wooden beams and low ceilings recall the time when travelers stopped here on their way along the coast.
