Newport Country Club, Private golf club in Newport, Rhode Island, United States
Newport Country Club is a private golf club on the coast of Rhode Island with a course extending more than 6,000 yards. The 18 holes run through gently rolling terrain bordered by the Atlantic and covered with low grasses.
Theodore Havemeyer and several wealthy families founded the club in 1893 and made it one of the five founding members of the American golf association a year later. The clubhouse was built in 1895 to Whitney Warren's designs in an architectural style reflecting the tastes of the elite of those years.
The club's name reflects the era when Newport served as the preferred summer retreat for America's wealthiest families. The clubhouse from the founding years still shows the same classical proportions that set the social standard at that time.
The course relies on no artificial irrigation for its fairways, so weather and season strongly influence conditions. Players should adjust their shots accordingly and expect varying ground conditions.
The club hosted both the first amateur championship and the first open tournament of the country in 1895. These two competitions took place in the same year and established Newport's role in American golf history.
