Castle Hill Light, Active lighthouse on Narragansett Bay in Newport, United States
Castle Hill Light is a granite lighthouse on the rocky coastline of Newport, standing approximately 10 meters high. The structure sits on a promontory jutting into Narragansett Bay and helps vessels navigate the eastern passage between Conanicut Island and Aquidneck Island.
The lighthouse was designed in the 1890s based on sketches by architect Henry Hobson Richardson, though his plan for an attached residence was never realized. The structure was built solely as a lighthouse and has served navigation purposes in the bay ever since.
The lighthouse serves as the turning point for world-class yacht races held throughout the year, making it essential to Newport's sailing traditions and competitive calendar.
The lighthouse is not open to visitors, but you can view it from footpaths starting near Castle Hill Inn and Castle Hill Cove Marina. The best way to see and photograph the structure is by walking the coastal trails accessible from these nearby locations.
In 2021, Castle Hill Inn signed an agreement with the Coast Guard to maintain the lighthouse exterior through regular power washing and painting. This partnership ensures the structure retains its appearance and structural integrity over time.
