Jamaica Estates, Upscale residential neighborhood in Queens, United States

Jamaica Estates is a residential neighborhood in Queens featuring single-family houses in Tudor and Colonial styles arranged along curved streets. The layout breaks away from the city's rectangular grid and uses the natural shape of the land with mature trees throughout.

The development began in 1907 as a planned residential community designed by Frederick Law Olmsted Jr., who had worked on other landscape projects before. The original land covered roughly 503 acres and was developed while keeping the existing trees in place.

Walking through the streets, you will notice families tending gardens around their large homes and neighbors greeting each other on quiet sidewalks. The residential architecture still shows the influence of European building traditions visible in the facades and doorways.

The area is best explored on foot since the curved streets invite walking and the houses are easy to see from the sidewalks. A subway station at the southern edge connects the neighborhood to downtown and other boroughs.

The street names come from languages of the United Kingdom and reflect the design thinking of the founding period. The road network follows the natural contour lines, giving each street its own curve and view.
