Lehigh Valley, Geographic valley in eastern Pennsylvania, United States.

The Lehigh Valley is a valley in eastern Pennsylvania in the United States, extending about 40 miles (64 kilometers) in length and 20 miles (32 kilometers) in width. The river that gives the valley its name flows through the area between two mountain ranges and forms a plain with forests, fields and urban centers.

In the 18th century, German settlers established themselves in this area and founded communities that remain to this day. During the War of Independence, the region served as a refuge for important symbols of the young American nation.

The name comes from the Lenni Lenape word for the river that flows through the area and has been inhabited along its banks for centuries. Visitors still notice the church architecture and half-timbered houses shaped by the German immigrants of the 18th century.

Drive along the secondary roads to reach the riverside towns and the viewpoints in the surrounding hills. The best time to visit is autumn when the foliage changes color, or spring when the fields turn green.

The area has numerous covered wooden bridges dating back to the 19th century that cross small tributaries. These structures are so common in the region that locals consider them a natural part of the landscape.
