Yonkers, Urban center in Westchester County, New York, United States
Yonkers stretches along the Hudson River and covers residential areas, commercial zones, and redeveloped waterfront sections over roughly 20 square miles (52 square kilometers). The architecture shifts from single-family homes to apartment blocks and business buildings, while riverfront projects and public walkways have reshaped the shoreline.
A Dutch colonist received this land in the mid-1600s, and the name came from his title of young gentleman. The area later grew into a center for carpet manufacturing before industry declined and the city shifted toward new development.
Walking through the streets, you find a mix of cultures visible in storefronts, restaurants, and community gatherings that reflect the city's Latin American presence. Families from different backgrounds share parks and public spaces, creating a daily rhythm that feels open and neighborly.
The area can be reached from central New York by public transport or car in a short time. Visitors exploring the waterfront will find walking paths and seating areas with views across the river.
A carpet company shaped the local economy for decades and sent products to markets around the world. Some of the old factory buildings remain and have been converted into apartments, studios, and shops.
