Yonkers, Urban center in Westchester County, New York, United States

Located along the Hudson River, Yonkers extends across 52 square kilometers of land with residential neighborhoods, commercial districts, and waterfront developments.

The Dutch colonist Adriaen van der Donck received this land grant in 1645, with the name Yonkers derived from his title Jonkheer, meaning young gentleman.

The recently established El Parque de la Cultura represents the first park dedicated to Hispanic heritage, reflecting the city's large Latino population of 40 percent.

The Yonkers Fire Department maintains 14 stations throughout the municipality, responding to 16,000 emergency calls each year with a team of 450 firefighters.

The Alexander Smith and Sons Carpet Company transformed Yonkers into a manufacturing center, producing floor coverings that reached markets worldwide.
