Delavan Terrace Historic District, Historic residential district in Yonkers, United States
Delavan Terrace Historic District is a residential neighborhood in Yonkers that contains ten houses built in Late Victorian and early 20th-century revival styles. The homes spread across about 4.2 acres on elevated ground between the Hudson River and Saw Mill River.
The neighborhood took shape in the 1880s when industrialists from Otis Elevator Company and Alexander Smith Carpet Mills built their homes here. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
The houses along Delavan Terrace reflect the preferences of wealthy factory owners from around 1900 who chose this location for its views and displayed their prosperity through grand homes.
The district sits on elevated terrain and is best explored on foot to see the houses from both sides of Delavan Terrace. It is easily accessible from downtown Yonkers and provides a good overview of late 19th-century architecture.
Actress Billie Burke, known from Broadway and film, lived in one of the houses during the 1920s after marrying theater producer Florenz Ziegfeld. Her home shows the glamorous lifestyle that the district's wealthy residents enjoyed.
