Alexander Smith Carpet Mills Historic District, Industrial heritage complex in Yonkers, US.

The Alexander Smith Carpet Mills Historic District contains 85 buildings, including 19 mill structures and six rows of workers' housing along Saw Mill River.

The complex originated in 1871 and expanded between 1876 and 1883, becoming the largest carpet manufacturer in the world with 7,000 workers by 1900.

The mills employed numerous immigrants from Scotland, Ireland, and Ukraine, who resided in designated housing areas known as Moquette Row.

The district now functions as a New York State Qualified Production Facility and houses the YoHo Artist Community at 540 and 578 Nepperhan Avenue.

The Skinner-Smith Axminster loom, patented in 1877, reduced carpet production costs by 75 percent and generated royalties from manufacturers worldwide.
