Alexander Smith Carpet Mills Historic District
Alexander Smith Carpet Mills Historic District, Industrial heritage complex in Yonkers, US.
The Alexander Smith Carpet Mills Historic District spans 85 buildings, including 19 mill structures and multiple rows of worker housing along the Saw Mill River. The layout clearly shows how production and residential life were tightly interwoven.
The complex was established in 1871 and expanded between 1876 and 1883 into one of the world's largest carpet manufacturers. This rapid growth reflected the enormous demand for carpets during the industrial boom.
The worker housing areas reveal how families from Scotland, Ireland, and Ukraine built their lives and communities here. Walking through Moquette Row, you see how tightly organized daily life was in these neighborhoods.
Visitors can explore the site independently and view the various mill and residential buildings from outside. The area is spacious, so allow time to wander and wear comfortable shoes for walking.
An Axminster loom patented here in 1877 reduced production costs dramatically and was licensed by manufacturers worldwide. This invention became a turning point for the industry and marks this place as a birthplace of technological innovation.
