Ozark–St. Francis National Forest, National forest system in Arkansas, United States

Ozark–St. Francis National Forest is a 1.2 million acre woodland spanning Arkansas's Ozark Mountains, featuring limestone cliffs, spring-fed streams, and mixed hardwood stands. The forest divides into two main sections connected by shared management and similar natural character.

President Theodore Roosevelt established the Ozark National Forest in 1908 as part of the national conservation movement. Government programs in following decades built trails, campgrounds, and visitor facilities that remain in use today.

The name Ozark traces back to French explorers who called the area 'Aux Arcs,' referencing the indigenous peoples living here long ago. Visitors today can sense this heritage woven into the landscape through the natural features and terrain they encounter while exploring.

The forest provides 23 developed campgrounds, 395 miles (636 kilometers) of hiking trails, and nine swimming areas spread throughout its network. Visitors should prepare for varied terrain and check local conditions before heading out, as weather and seasonal changes affect trail access and water levels.

The St. Francis section offers direct public access to the Mississippi River shoreline, a feature that sets it apart from other national forests. This rare arrangement lets visitors encounter the river's scale and flow without crossing private property.
