Madison Avenue, Commercial avenue in Upper East Side, Manhattan, United States.
Madison Avenue is a north-south avenue in Manhattan running from Madison Square at 23rd Street to the Harlem River Drive at 142nd Street. The street carries traffic northbound through the city, connecting several residential neighborhoods and business districts.
The avenue was established in 1836 outside the original street grid of Manhattan. Starting in the 1920s, many advertising agencies moved to offices along the street, turning the avenue's name into a term for the advertising industry.
The name comes from Madison Square at the southern end of the street, honoring President James Madison. Today people know the avenue mainly for its luxury shops and galleries, which give it an international character.
Several bus lines run along the avenue, including M1, M2, and M3. Access to the Fifth Avenue subway station is at 53rd Street.
Buildings along the street follow European architectural styles and now house international fashion flagship stores and art galleries. Street signs sometimes show the additional name Avenue of the Americas, although locals rarely use this term.
