AXA Equitable Center, Postmodern skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan, US
The AXA Equitable Center exhibits a two-tone granite facade with white horizontal and red vertical bands across its 54-story structure measuring 229 meters in height.
Edward Larrabee Barnes designed this corporate headquarters for the Equitable Life Assurance Society, completing the construction in 1986 as part of Manhattan's commercial expansion.
The building incorporates galleries from the Whitney Museum of American Art and displays works by Roy Lichtenstein, Sol LeWitt, and Thomas Hart Benton throughout its public spaces.
Located between 51st and 52nd Streets at 787 Seventh Avenue, the center contains three million square feet of office space, museums, retail stores, and restaurants.
The center connects to its sister building at 1285 Sixth Avenue through an eight-hundred-foot corridor and galleria, forming part of the 6½ Avenue pedestrian path.
