Brill Building, Office building in Midtown Manhattan, US.
The Brill Building is an office tower in Midtown Manhattan with eleven floors, located near Times Square along Broadway. The structure features narrow windows running up the facade and interior spaces designed as compact workrooms with high ceilings.
The building opened in 1931 under a different name and was later renamed after a clothing company. During the 1950s and early 1960s, it transformed into a hub for songwriters and music publishers who worked side by side in rented offices.
Numerous songwriters and producers, including Carole King and Neil Sedaka, created chart-topping hits within the small offices of this Manhattan building.
Visitors can view the building from the outside, as it remains a working office space with access limited to tenants and staff. The surrounding streets offer easy walking routes through Midtown, and the area near Times Square stays open all day and evening.
The concentration of music businesses in one location allowed songwriters in the early 1960s to write, record, and publish songs without leaving the building. This self-contained system shaped popular music for years and produced many hits still recognized today.
