Palace Theatre, Broadway theatre in Times Square, New York City, United States
The Palace Theatre is a theater building on Broadway in Manhattan that offers a total of 1,648 seats on three levels. The interior shows richly decorated plasterwork, curved balconies and side boxes that slope toward the stage.
Martin Beck opened the house in 1913 as a venue for variety performances that dominated the program until the 1930s. Later followed years of film screenings before the Nederlander Organization converted it into a musical stage in 1965.
The name comes from a time when the venue was considered a royal stage for variety arts and performers hoped for breakthroughs there. Today it mainly serves as a musical theater, with the furnishings still recalling the former grandeur.
The theater is located at 1564 Broadway near Times Square and is easily accessible by public transport. The entrance is at street level while the building itself rests on an elevated platform.
In 2022, the entire building was raised about 30 feet (9 meters) using hydraulic supports to create retail space underneath. This measure aimed to preserve the historic facade while meeting modern requirements of the location.
