Winter Garden Theatre, Broadway theater in Midtown Manhattan, US.
The Winter Garden Theatre is a Broadway playhouse in Midtown Manhattan in the state of New York located on the west side of the avenue and reached through a street-level entrance. The auditorium rises across multiple levels with balconies and offers views toward a broad stage equipped with fly loft and wing space for scenery movement.
Architect William Albert Swasey designed the building for its opening in 1911, incorporating parts of the older commercial structure from 1896 into the new construction. In the 1920s Herbert J. Krapp completely redesigned the interior and gave the hall the classic form of a Broadway playhouse.
The name recalls early years when vaudeville and revues filled the program and the stage ranked among the largest in New York at the time. Today the house often presents large ensemble productions where choreography and complex staging use the wide space to tell layered stories.
Access occurs directly from the avenue without steps, making entry easier for all visitors. Restroom facilities with accessible features and hearing assistance devices are available, and early arrival is recommended.
The original use as the American Horse Exchange shaped the floor plan so that large open areas behind the stage remain to this day. These spaces allow extensive storage for scenery and offer room for rehearsals of larger ensembles directly within the building.
