University of Oklahoma, Public research university in Norman, Oklahoma, US
The University of Oklahoma is a public research institution with three locations in Norman, Oklahoma City, and Tulsa. It serves more than 32,000 students across 174 academic programs.
The institution was founded in 1890 in Oklahoma Territory when local residents donated 165 hectares near the Norman railroad depot. It opened its doors before the state itself was officially created.
The institution takes its name from the state of Oklahoma, while students today go by the nickname Sooners. Campus life centers on outdoor gatherings and sporting events among the redbrick buildings.
Visitors should expect a sprawling campus with buildings spread out and plan enough time for walking between locations. The Bizzell Memorial Library is open to the public and holds the largest research collection in the state.
The campus architecture blends Gothic academic traditions with regional design elements, a style once commented on by Frank Lloyd Wright. The Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art displays French Impressionist works alongside Native American art under one roof.
