Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site, Presidential residence in Hyde Park, United States
The Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site is a historic residence in Hyde Park, New York, featuring elements of Federal architecture. The main house with multiple floors stands among landscaped gardens and paths that reach down to the Hudson River.
James Roosevelt acquired the property in the second half of the 19th century, and his son Franklin was born here a few years later. The younger Roosevelt returned regularly during his four terms as president and hosted visiting heads of state at the family estate.
The estate carries the name Springwood because natural springs emerge across the grounds. Visitors can enter the library where personal letters and family photographs are displayed, offering insight into daily life during the presidency.
Guided tours through the residence take around one hour and cover rooms on both floors. The site sits roughly 2 miles (3 kilometers) south of Hyde Park village center and offers parking near the visitor center.
A hand-operated elevator allowed the president to travel between floors after he could no longer walk. Naval paintings and ship models from his personal collection hang throughout the house, reflecting his lifelong passion for the sea.
