Bradley Beach, Beach resort town in New Jersey, United States
Bradley Beach is a coastal borough in New Jersey located between Ocean Grove and Avon, with residential neighborhoods and a waterfront promenade. The town features sandy beaches and stretches along the Atlantic Ocean with modest commercial and residential buildings.
James Bradley and William Bradner purchased oceanfront land in 1871 and began developing the area that would become this coastal town. Growth accelerated in the late 1800s and early 1900s as it transformed into a popular seaside destination.
The community became known as 'Chinatown by the Sea' when Chinese families moved here during the mid-20th century and built a thriving neighborhood. You can still see traces of this heritage in local shops and restaurants along the beachfront.
The town is small and easy to navigate on foot, with beach access available from several points along the waterfront. Plan your visit around daylight hours and check local beach conditions before entering the water.
The town created the first beach badge system in New Jersey in 1929, which charged non-residents a fee for beach access. This innovation became a model that spread to other coastal communities in the state.
