Johnstown, Industrial city in Cambria County, Pennsylvania, United States
Johnstown is an industrial city in Cambria County, western Pennsylvania, set where three rivers meet among wooded hills. Downtown spreads along narrow valleys, while residential neighborhoods climb the surrounding slopes and overlook the river basin below.
The city emerged in the mid-19th century as an iron and steel production center, drawing thousands of workers from Europe. After the catastrophic flood of 1889 reshaped the landscape, it was rebuilt quickly and grew into one of the region's largest steel hubs.
The city grew as workers from central and southern Europe settled near the steel mills, bringing traditions that shaped neighborhoods and local habits. Many family-run bakeries and social clubs continue to honor recipes and gatherings passed down through generations.
The city is best explored on foot in the downtown area, while the hillside neighborhoods are more accessible by car or funicular. Spring and fall offer mild weather for walking along the riverbanks and through the historic streets.
The funicular railway on Yoder Hill, operating since 1891, can carry vehicles alongside passengers and offers a wide view of the river valleys from the top. The former Bethlehem Steel plant, once employing tens of thousands, closed in the 1990s, and its remnants still shape the riverfront landscape today.
